The new Sri Lankan Ambassador Prof Dr W M Karunadasa took part in a workshop on ‘We Sri Lankans in Qatar and role for the motherland’ at the Sri Lankan embassy yesterday.
Representatives of 25 Sri Lankan community forums in Qatar took part.
Prof Karunadasa, a renowned academic, has authored more than 20 books on international relations and a few are part of educational syllabus in his country.
He said he feels pride for having been given responsibility to foster relations between Qatar and Sri Lanka.
He said Sri Lanka has the pride of hosting three generations of Qatari leadership which has resulted in the presence of over 120,000 Sri Lankan workforce playing its part in Qatar’s ongoing development.
Dr Karunadasa said: It is his wish to accelerate the process of ‘economic diplomacy’ by initiating an interactive academic workshop with my community members to generate innovative ideas and action plans in achieving national goals.”
The workshop took place at 9am and last three hours.
Six groups were formed to submit proposals in the trade, investment and health sectors, students exchange programme, tourism and welfare of Sri Lankan work force.
