He made this announcement at the national Drugs and Alcohol Temperance programme held at the Galle Municipal Council.

The President said that he came to the decision to introduce the death penalty in the aftermath of several incidents of rape and the recent killing of the five year-old girl in Kotadeniyawa.

Sirisena added that he is in a position to impose death penalty as per the executive powers vested in him. However, he added that he wanted to obtain the opinion of the Parliament before making such a decision.
