A serious question looms large on the safety of bottled water in the Sri Lankan market with the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) seizing a stock of nearly 37000 bottles of water that contained chemicals from a reputed manufacturing company in Peliyagoda.
Speaking to 'Asian Mirror', a spokesman from the Consumer Affairs Authority said the stock would be produced before the Government Analyst tomorrow (22) for further inquiries.
There have been serious allegations against bottled water manufacturers in Sri Lanka for constantly violating health and safety standards.Chemicals contained in bottled water alter PH levels of water making them unsuitable for human consumption.
According to Health Ministry sources there are more than 1000 bottled water manufacturers in the Sri Lankan market. Although there is a mechanism to issue license for bottled water manufacturers, a large number of companies still operate without license or any sort of approval from health authorities.
In addition to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), the Health Ministry is also conducting raids on bottled water manufacturers operating without license. However, Asian Mirror reliably learns that the Health Ministry has not taken measures to make the public aware of bottled water manufacturers who have obtained license.
Meanwhile, the spokesman of the Consumer Affairs Authority told Asian Mirror that it would continue raids of manufacturers who violate health and safety standards in manufacturing and distributing bottled water.
