Red Water Discoloration in Ratmalana Canal: Person Arrested

November 06, 2024

A person was arrested over recent red coloration of water of a canal in Badowita, Ratmalana reported on Tuesday (5) morning.

The individual had disposed of the dye into the canal. According to the person’s statement, a significant quantity of dye was accidentally soaked by rain while being transported from a shop, leading him to dispose of it in the canal, unaware of the potential impact. The Dehiwala Police have arrested the individual, who was subsequently released on police bail and is expected to appear in court.

Following this, the Central Environment Authority (CEA) has urged the public to remain calm regarding the recent red coloration of a canal in Badowita, Ratmalana. Since the morning of 5 November 2024, the canal water turned red, prompting immediate investigation, the CEA said in a statement.

After receiving information, the Western Provincial Office of the CEA conducted a field investigation on the same day. Preliminary findings indicate that the discoloration is due to the release of a water-soluble pigment into the canal. Initial tests conducted on-site by the CEA showed that pH levels and other environmental parameters are within normal ranges and do not pose immediate health risks.

Further analysis is underway, with water samples sent to CEA’s laboratory for more comprehensive testing.

The CEA cautions that, as the pigment spreads, it may affect the color of connected waterways. Although no fish deaths have been observed, the public is advised against using the canal water for daily activities until the CEA’s ongoing tests are completed.
