U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, highlighted the growing interest of American businesses in Sri Lanka following the relocation of U.S.-based AmSafe Bridport, a subsidiary of Transdigm Company, from China to Sri Lanka. This move, announced on October 31, involves the establishment of manufacturing operations in the Wathupitiwala Export Processing Zone and is expected to create 500 direct jobs.
Chung praised the decision as indicative of a broader trend of U.S. investment in the country, which is already the largest export market for Sri Lankan goods. She stressed the importance of strengthening the investment climate by implementing anti-corruption measures and enhancing transparency to attract more foreign companies.
"The diversification of supply chains offers significant opportunities for Sri Lanka," she noted, encouraging the government to maintain a favorable environment for investment. Chung expressed confidence that these efforts would lead to job creation and economic growth.
Furthermore, she underscored the strong partnership between the U.S. and Sri Lanka, focusing on shared goals such as agricultural productivity and maritime security. The Ambassador concluded by reaffirming the U.S. commitment to supporting Sri Lanka's economic development and fostering inclusive communities.
