The Sri Lankan government has clarified that the recent incident in Arugambe is not related to extremism but to organized crime.
A senior security official confirmed that a delegation including Defense Secretary Sampath Thuyakontha informed the American representatives about the investigations being carried out regarding the arrest of 6 people involved in the incident. Officials said that the situation was caused by the actions of a specific group of people rather than extremist activities.
US embassy officials reportedly reacted positively to the findings. The Sri Lankan delegation also expressed concern over a travel advisory recently issued by the United States, questioning its necessity given the nature of the incident. They formally requested that the advisory be lifted, stressing that there were no significant threats.
The six arrested included a Maldivian national and former LTTE. One of them is related to the murder of former cabinet minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle. Investigations have revealed that an Iranian national tried to create unrest by providing financial support to the suspects before any incident took place.
