Sri Lanka's Inland Revenue Department has announced an achievement in tax revenue collection for the first eight months of 2024, reaching Rs. 1.229 trillion. This represents a significant increase of 28.5% from the Rs. 956 billion collected during the same period in 2023.
The department attributed this growth to several key factors, including the introduction of new tax policies, a gradual economic recovery, and improvements in tax administration efficiency.
The revenue breakdown for the period is as follows:
- Corporate & Non-Corporate Income Tax: Rs. 624.4 billion
- Value Added Tax (VAT): Rs. 468.9 billion
- Social Security Contribution Levy: Rs. 122.9 billion
- Betting & Gaming Levy: Rs. 11.4 billion
- Share Transaction Levy: Rs. 1.5 billion
- Other Taxes: Rs. 219 million
