President Ranil Wickremesinghe addressed concerns regarding the postponement of Local Government elections, acknowledging it as a violation of citizens' basic rights but defending the decision as crucial for economic stability and public safety.
Speaking at the National Conference of the New People's Front (NPF) in Maharagama, Wickremesinghe said that focusing on economic stabilization was essential to ensure the availability of essentials such as gas, medicine, food, and fuel. He argued that dedicating time to the elections would have hindered efforts to stabilize the economy.
The President assured that despite the delay, his administration remains committed to protecting the basic rights of the populace. He announced plans to hold the General Election after the Presidential Election, with funds already secured for this purpose.
