A. Mohammed Ilyas, an independent candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election, has passed away at the age of 78. He passed away at Puttalam Hospital last night (August 22) due to a sudden illness.
Ilyas, a former Member of Parliament under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, had submitted his nomination for the upcoming presidential race on August 15.
This would have been his fourth attempt at the presidency, having previously run in 2010, 2015, and 2019.
