DMT Announces Suspension of Old Heavy Vehicle Driving Licenses

The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has announced that heavy vehicle driving licenses without an expiration date will be suspended, with the issuance of new licenses set to begin next year. DMT Commissioner General Nishantha Anurudda Weerasinghe said that sufficient time will be provided for drivers to obtain the new licenses, requiring only the old license and a medical certificate.

Currently, there are 1.1 million heavy vehicle driving licenses and 1.2 million normal vehicle licenses without expiration dates.
The DMT plans to give drivers a six-month period to transition to the new licenses.
