Sri Lanka has strongly objected to the construction of a "Tamil Genocide Monument" in Brampton, Canada, which is set to be built in Chinguacousy Park. On Friday, August 16, 2024, Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry summoned the Canadian High Commissioner to express the government's firm opposition to the project, which has been raised on multiple occasions.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that Minister Sabry condemned the monument as a perpetuation of what he described as a "false narrative" aimed at political gain within Canada. He stated that the allegation of genocide in Sri Lanka is based on "malicious disinformation" and lacks validation from any credible national or international authority.
The Sri Lankan government, which has been working on reconciliation efforts since the end of its internal conflict, views the monument as undermining these initiatives by promoting divisiveness. The Foreign Ministry called on the Canadian government to intervene and halt the construction of the monument, stressing that it could harm bilateral relations between the two countries.
