A recent report has revealed that at least twenty Members of Parliament (MPs) have not yet declared their assets and liabilities for the current year.
officials from the Election Commission have notified Parliament to remind these MPs of their obligation to submit these declarations.
Out of the 169 MPs required to declare their assets and liabilities to the Speaker of Parliament by June 30 each year, these 20 have not complied, drawing the attention of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABOC).
Sri Lanka’s new Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law stipulates that any MP who fails to declare their assets by August 31 could face a prison sentence of at least one year, a fine equivalent to 12 months of their current salary, or both.
