The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has granted leave to proceed with a petition against Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Ranmal Kodituwakku regarding an alleged assault incident in Kahangama, Ratnapura, in October 2021. The bench, comprising Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Kumudinee Wickramasinghe, and Priyantha Fernando, made this decision after considering the petition filed by Mishara Ranasinghe.

The petition accuses SDIG Kodituwakku, along with his driver, personal security officer (PSO), the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kiriella Police Station, and the Traffic OIC of the same station, of assaulting the petitioner. It was filed under several articles of the Sri Lankan Constitution, including those related to freedom from torture, equal protection under the law, and freedom of movement.

The court also issued several interim orders, including directives to the Inspector General of Police to appoint a special team to investigate the disappearance of a key medical document related to the case, and for the National Police Commission to conduct a fresh investigation. Additionally, the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of Mulleriyawa Base Hospital was ordered to provide a detailed report on the injuries sustained by the petitioner. The Attorney General was also instructed to consider the evidence and initiate criminal action if necessary.

Attorneys Thishya Weragoda and Dilan Nalaka represented the petitioner, while Anura Meddegoda PC and his team represented the respondents, including SDIG Kodituwakku. State Counsel Chrisanga Fernando appeared for the Attorney General.
