Supreme Court Invalidates Presidential Pardon in Royal Park Murder Case

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has nullified the presidential pardon granted by former President Maithripala Sirisena to Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, convicted in the Royal Park murder case. The court announced today that the pardon violated the Constitution.

Jude Shramantha Jayamaha was sentenced to death for the 2005 murder of Yvonne Jonsson at the Royal Park Condominium complex in Rajagiriya. Initially, in 2012, he received a 12-year prison sentence, but the Court of Appeal later convicted him of murder, leading to a death sentence by the Supreme Court. Former President Sirisena pardoned Jayamaha in 2019, a decision now overturned by the Supreme Court.
