The Court of Appeals has issued notice to former President Maithripala Sirisena regarding a contempt of court petition filed against him. The petition was submitted by Montague Sarathchandra, an executive committee member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
The case was heard this morning before a two-member judge bench, comprising the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, and Justice Shashi Mahendran. The bench ordered the attorneys of the petitioning party to send notice to Sirisena to confirm the facts of the petition.
Sarathchandra alleges that Sirisena violated a court order issued by the Colombo District Court, which prohibited him from acting as the Chairman of the SLFP. This alleged violation forms the basis of the contempt of court claim against the former president.
Further proceedings are expected as the court seeks to establish the validity of the allegations against Sirisena.
