UGC Requests Striking University Non-Academic Staff to Return to Work

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has called on striking non-academic staff at universities to resume work to facilitate the start of academic activities. UGC Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge emphasized the government's position on the staff's demands regarding salaries and allowances. He warned that the ongoing strike, now in its 28th day, is delaying the graduation of approximately 150,000 students.

Despite this appeal, Dhammika S. Priyantha, Co-Chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee, stated that forming committees instead of addressing their demands is ineffective, and thus, the strike will continue.
