President Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced the commencement of research into the relationship between Buddha’s teachings and Artificial Intelligence (AI), slated to begin next year. A significant budget of LKR 01 billion has been earmarked for this groundbreaking initiative.
President Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of this research, indicating that while initially scheduled for this year, its commencement has been postponed due to the absence of necessary legislation governing AI regulation. He reiterated the government's commitment to advancing this project once the requisite legal framework is in place.
The announcement was made during the 100th anniversary celebration of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Society Moratuwa, held at the Moratuwa Buddhist Society Hall. President Wickremesinghe also pledged government support for the restoration of the historic hall, which is approaching its centenary.
During the event, President Wickremesinghe underscored the significance of aligning efforts to address pressing global challenges such as climate change with the teachings of Buddha. He highlighted the need to explore the implications of integrating AI with ethical principles espoused by various religions, including Buddhism.
