Former President Maithripala Sirisena has officially resigned from his position as the chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
In a meeting held in Kotte this morning, the Executive Committee unanimously elected Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe as the new chairman.
The legitimacy of this decision is contested by a faction within the party, led by party secretary Duminda Dissanayake.
Dissanayake mentioned in a letter addressed to Senior Deputy Secretary Sarath Ekanayake that the meeting and subsequent appointment lack validity.
