Major Increase in Women Abuse and Teenage Pregnancies in Sri Lanka, Says DIG Renuka Jayasundara

Deputy Inspector General of the Child and Women Abuse, Investigation, and Prevention Division, Renuka Jayasundara, has reported a major surge in both women abuse and teenage pregnancies. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, she also pointed out a disturbing rise in internet-based crimes targeting women and children.


DIG Jayasundara's report sheds light on the worsening state of women's safety and the vulnerability of teenage girls in Sri Lanka. The increase in cases of abuse and teenage pregnancies underscores the urgent need for effective preventive measures and stricter enforcement of laws to safeguard the rights and well-being of women and children.


Speaking at a press conference, DIG Jayasundara emphasized the crucial role of parents and elders in fostering a safe environment for women and children. She stressed the importance of responsible behavior and urged parents to be vigilant in monitoring their children's online activities. In particular, she highlighted the need for prompt and confidential reporting of threats to release private information, including nude photos online.
