Sabry calls on own Govt. to stop hunt against CBSL governor

September 02, 2022

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry today called on the government to stop its hunt against CBSL governor Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe. Sabry was responding to the remarks made in parliament yesterday (01) over the actions of the Central Bank when he made these comments today.

Sabry said he is prepared to take responsibility for all decisions taken during his tenure as Minister of Finance including that of the announcement made about the country’s preparation to default on its loans while not having informed the parliament about it prior to the fact.

He added “We had to pay USD 203 million but the treasury only had USD 37 000 at the time. I could not fathom how we were to pay up. I took responsibility and discussed it with all relevant parties. I was given the necessary advice and guidance by the CBSL governor.” he said.

“If anyone wants to remove him, I will step down in his stead. He must remain. The people are benefitting from the decisions he made. Do not hunt people down. We need such brave persons who are able to take correct decisions” he added.
