Weerasumana Weerasinghe, Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, says that the CEB is carrying out unfair electricity disconnections on underprivileged people including himself without working towards collecting the Rs. 4.5 billion owed to it by the elite of the country.
Weerasinghe said the CEB recently disconnected the electricity supply to his residence as well. The MP made these comments at a meeting held in Matara yesterday.
“I could not pay the electricity bill and only seven days elapsed they came and disconnected it. I paid and got it reconnected with the greatest difficulty. This is how all the ordinary people are treated” he said.
He said the CEB should attempt to collect all arrears from the elite who have not paid their bills as opposed to increasing electricity tariffs for the poor. “They are trying to rectify the issue by taxing the ordinary man rather than introduce regeneration plans” he added.
