Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said a new constitution would be introduced to the country within a year.
Speaking to media, Amaraweera said the 20th Amendment to the Constitution did not bestow any unprecedented powers on the President.
"All the powers vested in the President under the 20th Amendment to the Constitution existed before the 19th Amendment. We all know tha the 19th Amendment to the Constitution resulted in a major crisis," he said.
"There is no room for any dictatorship under the 20th Amendment and this is only an interim provision before the enactment of the new constitution."
Amaraweera also urged the opposition to present meaningful chages to the 20th Amemdnent to the Constitution.
