It is a mandatory requirement for the voters to prove their identity in order to cast their vote at the Parliamentary Election scheduled on August 05th, the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said.
It is therefore, mandatory for the voter to produce one of the following identification documents in order to cast his/her vote:
National identity Card
Valid Passport
Valid Driving License
Government Pensioners' Identity Card
Elders' Identity Card
Clergy/Priest Identity Card issued by the Department for Registration of Persons
Letter issued by the Department for Registration of Persons especially for the parliamentary election 2020 verifying the particulars of the National Identity Card
The statement also said that all Returning Officers have been instructed to pursue action to provide a temporary identity card issued by the Election Commission through Grama Niladhari/Estate Superintendent of the respective division to the electors who do not possess any of the above identification documents.
“Electors who need the temporary identity card may obtain the specified application from Grama Niladhari and handover the dully filled application to Grama Niladhari/Estate Superintendent of the respective division together with two copies of a recent black and white or colour photograph (bust only) of the size of.2 1" / 2cm x 3cm before seven days from the poll date i,e. 29 .07 .2020.
It is further notified that since the Department for Registration of Persons will take action to issue either a new NIC or a Letter to verify the particulars of the NIC for the electors if they have handed over their applications to obtain NICs before the 29rh day of July 2020 to respective Divisional Secretariats and their particulars have been fed into the data system of the Department for Registration of Persons by those Divisional Secretariats, such electors need not be issued with temporary .identity cards, it added.
