The Police today prevented a donation by former Opposition Leader and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa to the Polgasowita Hospital.

Janasuwaya foundation, headed by Premadasa, was scheduled to donate health equipment amounting to Rs. 3.7 million to the hospital. The organizers said the donation would be made to commemorate Premadasa's father, former President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

However, acting upon the instructions of the National Elections Commission, the Police banned a brief ceremony that was organized to mark the donation.

The Police said the event could be permitted without the participation of political party representatives and candidates contesting for the upcoming Parliamentary election.

As a result of the Police action, the organizers called off the event.
