Former Prime Minister and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said he wanted to give space for new and young leaders.
Addressing a gathering at the party headquarters, Wickremesinghe said although he wanted to allow more space for youngsters, the new generation had lost faith in Sri Lankan politics.
"They were talking about sending all 225 MPs home not too long ago," Wickremesinghe added.
"Although we appointed a person outside the political circles as President, we have not seen any change in the political area. So, this is a good opportunity for people. If you do not wish to support old faces, select young leaders," he added.
However, Wickremesinghe has come under fire within his own party for not giving enough space for second-tier leaders.
