Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had arranged a 88-year-old villager from the Polonnaruwa district to personally meet President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and make a donation to the national COVID19 fund.
S.B. Hewaheta, 88-year-old ex-village committee member from Polonnaruwa, drew the Prime Minister's attention when he sent Rs.5,000 to the COVID-19 fund with a hand-written note.
Moved by the gesture, the Prime Minister then arranged Hewaheta to meet the President on the latter's birthday (June 20) so he could handover the money himself.
The Prime Minister's act of kindness was hailed widely on social media as it fulfilled the wishes of an ordinary citizen who wanted to contribute to the national mission against COVID, in his own capacity.
