The United National Party has obtained an interim order from the District Court of Colombo against Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union President Harin Fernando and Secretary Vadivel Suresh preventing them from utilising the assets and finances of the union.

Both Fernando and Suresh are now aligned with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, led by former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa The union is the estate workers arm of the UNP.

However, Premadasa maintains that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya was formed with explicit approval from the UNP Working Committee.
