UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has announced that measures will be taken to suspend the membership of UNP members who have obtained membership with other political parties and submitted nominations on their ticket.

Kariyawasam said the UNP members were not allowed to submit nominations to contest from other parties without written approval from the party Working Committee.

A sizable proportion of UNP ex-MPs and members have handed over nomination papers to contest the Parliamentary election under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.

Kariyawasam said the party had sought explanations from everyone who handed over nominations papers from the SJB.

He added that the party Working Committee would have the final say on disciplinary action against them.
