Ruling party MP Udaya Gammanpila unconditionally apologized to the public for stating that the proposed cricket stadium in Homagama will be built with ICC financial assistance.
"I unconditionally apologize for stating that the proposed cricket ground would be financed by a grant from the ICC having relied on the information given by Minister Bandula Gunawardena," he tweeted today.
The ICC immediately distanced itself from the project claiming that it had no knowledge of the proposed cricket stadium.
Gunawardena previously said this would be Colombo's second international cricket ground with the capacity to play day and night matches. He said USD 40 million would be spent on the project.
A land has already been allocated to the project and the construction is expected to be completed in three years.
The proposal, however, came under fire from many quarters including former international ctricketers Mahela Jayawardena and Roshan Mahanama.
