The Open University of Sri Lanka has come under fire on social media for poor communication.
Himal Kotelawala, a senior editor who is also a student at the university wrote on Facebook that 'For a university with an excellent Social Studies Department with some highly qualified academic staff' the Open University had done a poor job at communication.'
He explained that for years the university had failed to keep its students informed and up to date. 'They have our email addresses but I have yet to receive a single email informing us of any exam delays, changed submission deadlines or presentation topics or what-have-you,' he wrote.
While the university defended its position on the same social media post, other students chimed in explaining they had a similar experience with the university.
"This is the age of instant communication. We have Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber and so many other ways of communicating. At the very least they could send an email," a student told Asian Mirror, asking why teachers couldn't be as innovative as their counterparts elsewhere.
"How easy would it be to send an email? If not an email, is it so hard for each teacher to set up a WhatsApp group and inform its students? Why not post on Facebook?', he asked, dismissing the unversities defence that it's website contained all the neccessary information. "We are very disappointed.
