Political party representatives requested the Elections Commission not to issue preferential numbers for candidates until the conclusion of the case on the election date, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera said.

Jayasekera said the situation in the country was not yet conducive to an election.

"The moment the Elections Commission issues preferential numbers, candidates will start their campaigns posing a severe public health risk," he added.

"I know the current impasse is unfair by the candidates. We are of the view that the Elections Commission has the final authority to decide on the matter," Jayasekera said,

Speaking to the media, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said except for a few parties, everyone called for the postponement of the election.
