Former Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said it was now confirmed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected in violation of the Constitution whilst being a dual Citizen.

"His continued contempt for the Sri Lankan Constitution now makes sense," Samaraweera tweeted earlier today.

Samaraweera's remarks came as a response to the latest quarterly report of the US Federal Register which listed Rajapaksa among those who ceased to be citizens of the US.

Although UNP-backed groups challenged Rajapaksa's citizenship before the judiciary in the run up to the last Presidential election, the Court of Appeal dismissed their claims.

It is still not clear whether the opposition will seek to challenge Rajapaksa's election as President in November, last year, based on the latest report.
