The All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulema has written to Health Services Director Dr Anil Jasinghe asking that he reverses his decision regarding the disposal of bodies of Muslims who have died as a result of COVID-19.
The ACJU said, 'We wish to reiterate that the Muslim community stand on this matter has always been that a Muslim deceased due to COVID-19, should have the option of being buried, in line with WHO guidelines and as implemented in over 180 countries since it is an integral part of our faith and a religious obligation of the community towards the deceased.'
Emphasizing that they would comply with all required standards - such as preparing grave with a depth of 8ft and if required cementing it, said, 'we re-appeal once again to your good self to reconsider the decision taken to dispose of the dead bodies of the confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases and provide the option of the burial of bodies.'
