Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved a request to construct a statue of late South African President Nelson Mandela in Colombo.

The request was made by the South African High Commission in Colombo, the government sources said.

South Africa has maintained close diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka since the end of apartheid and has even extended support to the country's reconciliation process.
