Former lawyer and activist Nagananda Kodithuwakku has filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court against the government for failing to avert the Easter Sunday explosions. 

Kodithuwakku has named 10 respondents in his petition including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, IGP Pujith Jayasundara, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the former Defence Ministry Secretary. 

"In any other country, all the key people responsible would have been prosecuted by the Attorney General in a situation like this" Kodithuwakku said, speaking to the media in Colombo today. 

"However, in our country, the Attorney General's Department has become a mere tool in the hands of the Executive," he added. 

Kodithuwakku also stated that the entire government should take responsibility for the Easter Sunday explosions which claimed the lives of over 250 people.

When asked as to why Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has been named a respondent in the case, Kodithuwakku said Rajapaksa had made it clear that he had prior knowledge of possible terror attacks.
