Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has extended his congratulations to Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, following her recent appointment, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today.
In a letter sent on Wednesday, Wong praised Dr. Amarasuriya’s leadership, saying, “The Sri Lankan people have given you a strong mandate to lead the country and embark on reforms. I am confident that under your leadership, Sri Lanka will succeed and grow stronger.”
Dr. Amarasuriya, 54, is an academic with a doctorate in social anthropology from the University of Edinburgh and will oversee the education and higher education portfolios in her new role.
Wong highlighted the long-standing ties between Singapore and Sri Lanka, built on economic cooperation and people-to-people connections. He noted existing collaborations in areas such as carbon credits, healthcare, and digitalisation, and expressed a desire to strengthen the bilateral relationship further.
“As we approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025, I look forward to working together to deepen our friendship,” Wong added, wishing Dr. Amarasuriya success in her role.
