The Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) has vehemently opposed the Sri Lanka Freedom Party's (SLFP) attempt to extend President Maithripala Sirisena's term by seeking the Supreme Court's opinion on his last day in office. 

Addressing a press conference, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera said the President would seek the opinion of the Supreme Court on his last day in office as the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was signed into law by the Speaker in June 2015. 

Hence, Jayasekera said, the President needed clarity on whether he could remain in office for five years from the day the 19th Amendment was signed into law by the Speaker — until June 2020.

However, several SPP stalwarts including Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma and party chairman G.L. Peiris have made it clear that the SLFP's claim has no legal basis. 

Speaking to the media, SLPP Parliamentarians have said it is an attempt to postpone elections. 

Therefore, both the UNP and the SLPP will severely resist President Sirisena's move to extend his term by another six months.
