Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the government had to take the blame for the current power and energy crisis 

Addressing a group of government members at Temple Trees today, Wickremesinghe said it was the responsibility of the government to ensure interrupted electricity supply to the public. 

The Prime Minister said during the period between 2015 and 2018, Sri Lanka into three agreements with India, Japan and China to construct LNG power plans, but none of them was pursued. 

Had the government begun those projects on time, Wickremesinghe said, they would have reached completion by now. However, the Prime Minister added that the government would resort to short-term remedial measures to resolve the power crisis inconveniencing the public. 

The Power and Energy Ministry was held by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, under the national unity government that existed before October 2018. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya served as the Minister of Power and Energy until October 26, 2018.
