Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had informed the JVP today that he agreed "in principle" to abolish the Executive Presidency.
The discussions between the Prime Minister and the JVP took place earlier today in Parliament. The talks centred on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution aiming to abolish the Executive Presidency.
However, Wickremesinghe had told the JVP that he wanted to discuss the 'modus operandi' with other parties representing the United National Front.
Reports added that Wickremesinghe fell short of making a commitment to support the 20th Amendment which has been presented to Parliament by the JVP as a private member bill.
It is not immediately clear whether there will be another round of discussions between the two parties.
The JVP has so far held discussions on the same matter with Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Tamil National Alliance.
Opposition Leader Rajapaksa too fell short of assuring support for the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
