President Maithripala Sirisena said some diplomats overstepped their boundaries and asked why he placed the Police Department under the Defence Ministry.
Speaking to the media heads this morning, Sirisena said he responded to them "appropriately" and said he could keep any number of institutions although he was not allowed to hold more than three ministries.
The President said he can bring any state institution under his control by way of a gazette.
In addition to the Police, Sirisena has also brought the Government Printers Department under the purview of the Defence Ministry.
Sirisena also said the inside story of the Police department was "tragic" and asked the media to investigate it.
