UPFA Southern Provincial Councilor Krishantha Pushpakumara has been arrested by the Akmeemana Police for child abuse allegations.

Pushpakumara, an astrologer by profession, first entered politics from the UNP and later defected to the UPFA camp. 

He has remained a loyal supporter of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa since the latter fell out of power in January 2015. 

Police said further investigations into the allegations involving Pushpakumara were underway. The alleged abuse had taken place within a place of worship (Devalaya), police sources said.
