The video of a woman being beaten up in a lift that is being shared on WhatsApp and other social media platforms in Sri Lanka did not occur in the country. 

The incident had occurred at the Taman Mutiara MRT Station lift in Malaysia but is being circulated by mischief makers in Sri Lanka, who say the incident occurred at the Marino Mall in Colombo 3. 

“The video is a classic case of fake news,” a senior journalist told Asian Mirror. “It is designed to cause panic in the minds of people and prevent them from going to Marino Mall.” 

He didn’t overrule the possibility that the campaign of misinformation could be aimed at discrediting the Marino Mall. 

Malaysia Police have offered RM 10, 000 reward for any information on the assaulter.
