Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the government would set up a new regulatory commission for Tuk Tuks transporting passengers.
Addressing a press conference today, the Minister said the draft piece of legislation in this regard has already been sent to the Attorney General's Department.
The move is aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers as well as Tuk Tuk drivers.
There are over 1 million Tuk Tuks in Sri Lanka and over 10,000 of them transport passengers in the Colombo district, on a daily basis.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) recently lunched a Tourist-friendly Tuk Tuk service to ensure the safety of foreigners using Tuk Tuks in Sri Lanka.
