Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has decided to reduce the income tax on specialist doctors from 24% to 15%.
The decision was made after a discussion between Samaraweera and the Association of Specialist doctors. Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne too was present at the discussion.
The government recently slapped a new upper tax ceiling of 24% on specialist doctors’ private income revising the earlier limit of 12%.
However, doctors’ state service income was not subject subject to the 24% tax, and that it was only their private practice that was covered by the recently announced tax ceiling.
Following the move, the specialist doctors threatened to withdraw from private practice to protest the raised tax ceiling.
