When looking at media reports of the Sinhala press, one might get a feeling that a new constitution has already been introduced and enacted, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
"There are two extremes in the Tamil and Sinhala speaking areas. We, the ones in the middle, are trying to negotiate and arrive at a common understanding. In this context, we can see that the Sinhala press has resorted to rabble rousing, " Wickremesinghe said, while speaking in Vavuniya, on Saturday.
"some media reports indicate that Sri Lanka has been handed over to India. some indicate that the country has been handed over to China. But, as I feel, everything has been completely handed over to media," the Prime Minister said, directing his criticism at the Sinhala press. M
This came a few days after the Prime Minister said a section of media has misrepresented the announcement made by the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters.
"There is no draft constitution at the moment. What we have is a steering committee report. Parliament is scheduled to debate the matter on October 30, 31 and November 01. After that we can see the topics we agree on, and the topics we disagree on," the Premier explained.
He said he already had a discussion in this regard, with some members of the Buddhist clergy, in Kandy.
"They agreed to present their opinion separately, after the Parliamentary debate," Wickremesinghe added.
