The Ministry of Education has issued a new circular outlining strict guidelines for teachers and principals on the use of social media applications such as WhatsApp, telegram and Viber in school activities.
This circular comes in the light of several recent controversies regarding the filming and sharing of footage of students by teachers on social media.
Issued by Education Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, the circular emphasizes that school authorities must prioritize student privacy and mental well-being when using social media. Teachers are prohibited from sharing videos, photos, voice recordings, or any other materials that could compromise student privacy or cause undue stress, with the Ministry warning that strict action will be taken against any school authorities who violate these guidelines.
The circular also includes specific directives to protect students and their families. Teachers are instructed to provide parents with ample notice regarding materials needed for primary-grade students, giving them sufficient time to prepare. Assignments and homework should be communicated to students only during school hours, rather than through social media channels, to avoid placing additional pressure or stress on parents. The Ministry further advises that classroom time should be maximized for covering the syllabus, without depending on social media to fulfill teaching responsibilities.
Additionally, the circular asserts that any actions that compromise student mental health, harm the school’s reputation, or breach disciplinary standards will be the full responsibility of school authorities.
