The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) it was in the process of upgrading its data gathering system with modern and sophisticated techniques.
A key aspect in this regard would be Tourism Satellite Accounting system (TSA), a standard statistical framework and the main tool for the economic measurement of tourism.
"The preparations are already underway to conduct certain surveys for the Tourism Satellite Accounting in collaboration with Department of Census and Statistics and Central Bank of Sri Lanka," the SLTDA said.
TSA data provides a better understanding of the place of tourism in an economy and enables a range of economic analysis. For example, it becomes possible to apply economic modeling techniques (like Input-Output analysis) to TSA data in order to estimate the indirect and induced effects of tourism in an economy.
The SLTDA said Sri LAnka's date gathering system in the tourism sector has been hailed by key international parties such as the UNWTO and PATA.
"Both UNWTO and PATA have recognized the Sri Lanka Tourism’s basic tourism data system as one of the best systems in the world. Further this system continues to improve with modern techniques for collating tourist information," Sri Lanka's Apex tourism body added.
