President Maithripala Sirisena said devolution of power should benefit the people on the ground, not politicians.
The President further said that the aim of the power devolution is to create an environment to provide equal development opportunities to all, while creating a just society.
He made these remarks addressing the conclusion ceremony of the Vavuniya District ‘Nila Mehewara’-President's People Service-National Programme, held at the Saivapragasa Ladies’ College in Vavuniya on October 21.
President Sirisena said the present government was committed to introduce political reforms to the country, despite opposition by some groups.
The President also emphasized that all those who oppose the country's political reforms must understand the ground reality. "All of them will be responsible for the complicated issues that will arise in the future, in the absence of political reforms," the President stressed.
The President also added that those who opposed political and constitutional reforms did not have solutions to issued faced by the people.
"A draft constitution is yet to be prepared. The report which has been submitted to Parliament leaves ample room for amendments and debate. It clearly protects the unitary status of the country, and the rightful place for Buddhism," the President explained.
The President also added that some elements were attempting to mislead the public my misquoting and misrepresenting the interim report on constitutional amendments.
