Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka said he was committed to turn Sri Lanka into a place where a woman must be able to walk in anywhere any time of the day wearing her jewelry, like in the golden days of the country's history.
"I am dedicated to make Sri Lanka a safe and secure place to visit and live by starting with drugs and organized crime, there is no place in paradise for drug lords and gangsters," Ratnayaka said, addressing the Annual General meeting of the Sri Lanka Retailers Association, in Colombo.
"The Police Department and I are working systematically to eradicate this menace from society. We will also focus on white collar and minor crimes," he added.
"We will use the latest in Policing techniques and technology to do this. We will be ready for cyber crimes and threats to our way of life from outside the country, posed over the internet. For this we need police force that is highly skilled and motivated. We have increased their salaries and we are working on improving living and working conditions. We will hire only the qualified and train them intensively," the Minister also added.
He said the Sri Lankan Police would be given equipment that is not second to other high-performing Police forces across the world.
