There are about six million users of social media in Sri Lanka and the technology should be used to communicate development news in the country, Deputy Minister of Vocational Training and Skills Development Karunaranaratna Paranavitana said.

At a workshop held at the Department of Government Information yesterday (16) he said a special unit on social media should be opened under the Ministry of Mass Media.

The Acting DG of Department of Government Information and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Company (SLBC) Attorney-at-Law Sudarshana Gunawardena was also present at the event.

He said that he was able to use social media at SLBC and make a vast change within three months by increasing the number of listeners by a great number.
